If Bernard Hopkins entered the ring for the final time Saturday night, it was a fitting way to go out.
Fighting, tooth and nail.
Just the way he's done for most of his trips to the canvas stage.
Although the feud between himself and Dawson reached a boiling point the second time around, Dawson had much respect for the living legend post-fight.
"You're a legend. I don't care what anybody says. You fought a helluva fight tonight. It was not an easy fight. It was a helluva fight. It was a great fight. You're definitely a legend in my book.
"I was in the ring with a legend tonight, and I look like I'm the one who took the beating. I mean, look at my face. I feel if any fighter could make it through that, I can make it through anything."
Hopkins felt likewise about the younger boxer.
"Chad Dawson deserves to be where he's at. He fought a helluva fight, and he dug down and I dug down.
"I hope that he represents it as I tried to represent it. I know that he will do well and that he will give anybody fits. At the end of the day, I really wish the brother right. I wish the brother well."
In spite of doing a number on Dawson's face, it was not the greatest outing for either fighter.
CompuBox numbers had Hopkins throwing 400 punches, landing just 106. Dawson wasn’t much better, throwing 431 and landing 151.
Is it the last time we see 'The Executioner' step between the ropes?
Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure.
It's been a fun ride.
