'Warriors Conquest 2' - Grimaldo vs. Santiago
Longmont - Adding to an already stacked card, Colorado's John Ryan Grimaldo (8-2, 5 KOs) will be taking on Juan Santiago (13-9-1, 8 KOs) in the co-main event of 'Warriors Conquest II' hosted by 'Ghost Town Promotions'.
The show takes place February 16th at 'The Longmont Athletic Club'.
In spite of all the great matchups on the card, it's likely this is the one that will have fans out of their seats until the final bell.
The Ft. Collins native in Grimaldo will be looking to get back to his winning ways after a tough fought loss back in June where the outcome seemed to be dictated by illegal shots by his opponent Mikael Zewski.
'UppercutsNews.com' recently had a chance to talk Grimaldo about the disappointing last outing and the big upcoming night.
"The punches he hit me with weren't bothering me but then he hit me in the back of the head a couple of times. You can actually see at the end of the fight where the referee is saying something to him about it but he never said anything to him during the fight.
"It is what it is and I just have to learn from it and work harder."
As he gets ready to step between the ropes for 'Warriors Conquest II', Grimaldo knows it won't be an easy task facing Santiago, a fighter known for his "no quit" attitude he brings to the ring every time.
"My opponent is really tough and it motivates me knowing it will be a tough fight. He doesn't have the best record, but it's because he's fought a lot of world class fighters. I'm not going to under estimate him at all."
Of all the qualities of Grimaldo's fight game, the main one might be Raul 'Romo' Utajara, Grimaldo's boxing coach and owner of the 'Longmont Boxing Club'.
Grimaldo didn't waste any time when asked what stands out about him (Utajara).
"His dedication.
"He's always here (the gym). He always tries to work around our schedules for us. He cares about boxing as much or maybe more than all of us. He's not just my coach, he's a friend also. Whenever I've had personal problems, he's been there to help me through them."
As for fight night, the plan is a simple one that includes using his above average power.
"I've always been like that. I'd rather hit you hard than waste time throwing pitter-patter punches. No matter what I've ever done, for some reason I've always liked hitting whether it was football or boxing."
That said, he's not going to let his emotion control his approach.
"I'm going to just fight hard, smart, under control, and not get over anxious. He (Santiago) won't quit, so I'll have to pace myself."
Utajara is also well familiar with Santiago and realizes it won't be an easy night for his fighter.
"Santiago is very well known in the area for being a brawler. What's better for a matchup than a big puncher like Grimaldo and a fighter that can dish it and take it like Juan.
"He has a chin of iron and he comes to fight. He's been around quite a bit. It will be a true test for both fighters.
"We have to take these tough fights and get back on a winning streak."
