On Saturday night, Carl Froch was no match for Andre Ward in Showtime's final round of the 'Super Six World Boxing Classic' tournament .
“I can’t believe it, I just can’t believe it. To just pull it off is unbelievable,” said Ward post fight. “I wanted to stay focused and we pulled it off. But we can get better.”
Froch admitted he was never able to mount an offense against the former Olympian.
“I had a bad night at the start. I couldn’t get anything going. But that’s due to Andre Ward’s slick defense skills. He’s very slippery, very tricky. I couldn’t get my shots off. Especially towards the end I wanted to let my shots go, but he slips and slides and keeps himself out of harm’s way.”
Overall, most boxing fans would have to agree that after stumbling out of the gate the tournament format ended up with a great final in spite of the lopsided outcome.
I believe the majority would even be in favor of refining this format to apply to the other weight divisions, streamlining the sport in terms of awarding belts.
Let's hope the powers that be take a close look at moving to the tournament type setup in the future.
