With Saturday night upon us, its time to take a look at the odds for the much anticipated Jones vs. Machida fight at UFC 140.
Until someone stops him, It's no suprise that 'Bones' is the heavy favorite at a (-)550 with "The Dragon" at a (+)375 as the underdog.
This means that you would have to risk $5.50 on Jones to win $1. On the flip-side, every dollar wagered on Machida would result in a return of $3.75. With the numbers for Jones, you can see why you can't make a serious run at earning money betting on the favorites everytime. You lose too many times and you have really set yourself back.
I don't feel comfortable enough with any of the underdogs from the main and co-main events to bet on them alone so it's a great time show how the "parlay" is used to string multiple strong favorites together to increase the payoff.
On this card, I like the looks of a Jon Jones, Frank Mir, and Mark Hominick parlay. All big favorites that are likely to win. Mir comes in at a (-)300 and Hominick at a (-)500. None of these are great payoffs on their own.
When you bet on these three together though, a $5 bet will amount to a payoff of $4.45. Almost double your wager. Much more worthwhile for growing your long term winnings than each favorite on his own.
And once again, only wager between about 2-5% of your total bankroll on any given bet no matter how much of a "sure thing" it is. This is the 'Golden Rule' of sports betting.
Follow these guidelines in addition to making some decent judgement calls and you should be able to grow a $20 deposit on your Bodog account into $100 in no time.
