The 80's was an unforgettable decade from the landscape of boxing history and this classic bout featuring former middleweight champion Vito Antuofermo was a good representation of the era.
Antuofermo put his 46-5-2 record and #9 WBC ranking on the line against Mauricio "El Gato" Aldana and it was nothing short of a backyard brawl from start to finish.
The broadcast from Conrad Hilton in Chicago, IL included that old-school ESPN lettering and a Kenny Bernstein who looked fresh out of college.
Aldana had black trunks trimmed in red while trunks with Antuofermo in white trimmed in blue.
Antuofermo came into the fight after having had his eyebrow bones shaved down due to previous cuts and built up scar tissue.
As is the case with any of the boxing or MMA wars we showcase here at 'Uppercuts Inc.', this one included non-stop action as the two traded blows for the duration of the fight.
During the course of the hard fought bout, the gritty Italian always seemed in control as he pressed the pace while Aldana looked off his game and wild as he battled back.
During the phone booth brawl, there were a handful of times the fighters clashed heads resulting in nasty cuts on Vito's face and scalp.
After the final bell, Antuofermo came away with a well derserved unanimous decision victory. He would go on to eventually lose to Marvin Hagler in a highly anticipated rematch that had resulted in a draw in the first fight between the two.
Aldana never got back to the spotlight of that night again, losing many of his final bouts and eventually disappearing from the boxing scene.
Antuofermo went on to parlay his success inside the ring to a respectable acting career outside of it.
He was most commonly cast as a gangster including parts in 'The Godfather III' and HBO's 'The Soprano's'.
