Las Vegas, NV - As Wyoming's Billy Martin (2-1) makes the long walk to the cage Saturday night as part of the 'Rogue Warrior Cage Fighting Championship' event, there will be more on his mind than his own fight.
His thoughts will also be back home with his friend, mentor, and fellow fighter, Brian Thorson, whom he is dedicating the biggest fight of his life to.
Thorson, who has no sight in one eye, was recently involved in what can only be described as a debacle as he was initially cleared to fight on the recent 'King Of The Cage - Future Legends 7' card back on June 2nd, only to be told once he got to Vegas that it was a no go because of the eye.
"I had two goals when I started fighting. One was to fight in the UFC, the other was to fight in Las Vegas. Once I found out that Brian wasn't going to be able to fight because of his eye, I told him if I ever got to fight there (Vegas) it was going to be for you."
And that's where fate took over.
"Three days later, I got the call asking if I would want to be the co-main event on this card. To make it all the way down there with all your friends and family there for you, then to have the commission say you can't fight. That would kill me."
For Martin, the road from a modest start in MMA all the way to the bright lights of 'Sin City' was really nothing more than a whim to blow of some steam.
"I was about nineteen and there was a guy down here in Riverton that was putting a show on. I ended up going there because I was angry after a fight with my Mom and I thought, what the hell, let's try it out. I ended up fighting a guy that was six four and about 185lbs, I was about 145. I knocked him out in about ten seconds.
"I ended up losing my next five fights in row and almost decided to quit. Two years later I went 36-6 as an amateur with 4 title belts and just recently went pro."
When it comes to training MMA in Wyoming, Martin has the respected Thomas Bingle and all of his experience behind him.
"I train down here at a gym called 'Wyoming Shoot Fighting' with Thomas Bingel. He's very, very smart when it comes to Sambo. I had a rematch with someone in one of my professional fights and I caught him in a heel-hook that tore his ACL.
"That was the first time I had ever thrown one. Thomas had taught me that three days before the fight. When it comes to leg locks, Thomas is the number one person I would go to."
Before he gets to bask in the glow of the city the never sleeps though, Martin will have a formidable opponent standing across from him in Demetrious Turner. A fighter that has a history of finishing foes quickly.
"He's about 5'7, very stocky and buff. He's got some power, he likes to drop his hands to his waist and swing from China. He's very, very, fast. He likes to knock people out and head home. I've seen him get his butt kicked for two rounds straight and get rocked, then out of the blue he threw a flying knee and knocked this guy out.
"He's very explosive. I think my BJJ is right there with anybody else so I think if I can weather the storm in the first round and get him on the ground in the second, I have a very good chance of submitting him.
"That's my prediction, submission in the second round."
As is the case with anybody I talk to from Wyoming, I had to know how Martin felt abut the state moving from a wild wild west free for all to becoming the 45th state to regulate the sport of MMA.
"I think it's going to be good for the fighters and bad for promoters. Some of the promoters around here just try to put a couple of shows on, make some quick cash and get out. It will be good for the fighters because with the commission, you have to have all your blood work done.
"Before, you could have pulled any "joe blow" off the street and you didn't know if they have AIDS or anything like that. Now you will now about your opponent and their blood work. The promoters around here that just want to make a quick buck aren't going to be putting shows on any more in Wyoming."
Win or lose in Vegas, there will be no rest for the Riverton resident as he has another big show on the horizon. One that will see him in the main-event.
"June 30th I'm going to be fighting Ryan Schultz for 'Medieval Fight Promotions', the former IFL champion. He trains with Ed Herman and we're going to be the main-event. It's going to be the coolest thing ever because my favorite fighter in the UFC, Chris 'The Crippler' Leben, is going to be the referee. You're going to have two UFC veterans in Casper for the show.
"It's going to be huge."
