Mike Montoya Jr. - 'Family Ties'

Colorado Springs - Friday night November 8th marks the start of a new era in the Colorado combat scene as Brandon Ortega, Nick Thompson and 'Sundown Entertainment' attempt to gain a foothold on the local boxing landscape.

Up first in what should be many great events from 'Sundown' is 'Friday Night Fights'.

A stacked card featuring five exciting match ups, including some of the best local talent from the Colorado Springs area.

One of the more intriguing story lines of the evening revolves around the much anticipated main-event and 'Springs' fighter Mike Montoya Jr. (4-2-1 pro).

Anchoring Montoya Jr.'s corner as he looks to get past Isaiah Barela (4-3 pro) will be someone not only more than qualified in the fight game, but someone close to his heart.

His father.

Mike Montoya Sr. will once again step through the ropes with his son as they try for Jr.'s fifth win as a professional.

Montoya Jr. had no loss of words describing how special his Dad is to him, let alone what it means to have him in his corner.

"Ever since I was a little kid, I went to tournaments with him and watched him fight.

"Since I can remember, it's also been my dream to fight and he's been the man to teach me everything so it's great to have him in my corner. A guy who knows the game and been around it a long time."

And the bond the two share isn't only on the canvas.

"We have a strong relationship in and out of the ring and at the gym. I've always looked up to him. He's been a great mentor."

As for Jr.'s passion for the 'Sweet Science', he points to Sr. in addition to the nature of the one-on-one sport.

"Growing up I played football and basketball but since I was four years old, I've watched my dad do it and watched it on TV. There's something about knowing it's just you in there.

"You have to believe in yourself and what your preparation was for the fight. It definitely makes you look inside yourself to get the job done."

In terms of the bout itself, Montoya Jr. will lean on his diversity as a boxer as he looks to dictate the tempo.

"I'd say I'm a pretty well rounded fighter but I like to set the pace.

"I don't really know a lot about him (Barela) but I'm not really worried about that. I'm confident in my skills and how I've prepared for the fight.

"I'll try to get him to walk into shots and make him pay if he leaves himself open."

I couldn't end the conversation without touching on what it means to him to finally showcase his skills in his hometown.

"It's definitely a great feeling.

"It's helped push me in the gym because it's something I haven't had the pleasure to do before. It feels great to finally fight in front of my family and friends.

"I'm hoping to get the hometown win and keep my career going up and forward."
