Now that the dust has settled from the historic 'Sundown Entertainment - Friday Night Fights' Colorado boxing event, here is a look at 3 things we learned from the big night:
Let's get to it....
1.) Boxing Is Here To Stay In CO Springs - In light of the turnout for 'Friday Night Fights' at the 'Colorado Springs Events Center', its evident the area loves its boxing and their fighters. In spite of some of the bad blood between various camps, I'm sure we can all agree that the event was needed, wanted, supported and will be back. Hats off to Brandon Ortega, Nick Thompson and their cohorts for getting the newly created promotion off the ground and bringing with it much professionalism and respect for the boxers involved and the sport.
2.) 'Sundown Entertainment' Is For Real - With the growing number of Rocky Mountain Boxing, MMA and Muay Thai promotions popping up across the region, it's becoming harder and harder to standout and carve out a promotion's spot on the local combat sports landscape but Brandon Ortega, Nick Thompson and the rest of their partners and supporters delivered when they had to. Their first event can be deemed a success. I'm sure Rocky Mountain boxing fans and especially those in the Springs area are looking forward to the next.
3.) Colorado Boxing Is Alive & Well - After the local boxing scene suffered a down turn as it seemingly was collateral damage of the decaying state of world professional boxing it appears to be on the upswing, as is the the sport itself. There is not enough space here to get into why boxing suffered in the last few years but one can point to things like too many belts, weights, promotions and the big fights/match ups not being delivered due to the constant bickering and infighting among the various world boxing promotions. Let's hope they've learned something.
