Classic Boxing Wars - Morales vs. Lowey 1997

Here at UppercutsNews.com, we're going to start taking a look at some of the classic boxing and MMA wars from the history books every couple of weeks or so.

First up is a battle in every sense of the word as the surging Erik Morales was taking on a very game challenger in John Lowey, the first defense of his WBC strap.

The bout took place December 12th of 1997 in Morales' own backyard of Tijuana, Mexico.

Morales was riding a long winning streak that was at 27 as he stepped between the ropes that night.

The underdog Lowey was coming into the fight on a four fight winning streak after suffering only the second loss of his pro career prior.

It was on right from the opening bell as Lowey got the jump on Morales while he was still coming out from a kneeling position in his respective corner.

After the first few close rounds, Morales was able to recover as he seemed to settle into the fight, growing accustomed to the awkward style of Lowey.

From here, the fight became an ugly display of frustrated head butts by Lowey. His actions ended up leading to points being deducted from him once in the 3rd round and twice in the 5th.

By the end of the 7th round, Lowey's corner had stopped the fight citing a broken right hand of Lowey's.

After the fight, Morales would continue to win until he faced Marco Antonio Barrera, losing his WBC featherweight title in the end. Morales would soon face Barrera again in a highly anticipated rematch, losing for the second time to Barrera and starting a slide he really has never fully recovered from.

Either way, this night will stand still in time as we remember the Morales that had earned his nickname of 'El Terrible'.
