Margaret Bloom's WY MMA Blog

Here is some great insight from a conversation Wyoming's Margaret Bloom had with Jerry Davis about the newly created Wyoming MMA commission:

The United States' first Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) specific commission was enacted in Wyoming, effective July 1, 2012.

While the rules are being promulgated, emergency rules will be in effect as soon as the week of July 9, 2012.

Jerry Davis of Cheyenne was gracious enough to speak with me this past week and answer the questions of this curious fighter. Mr. Davis stated that the WY rules are the result of extensive research of other national athletic commissions.

Mr. Davis is working closely with Colorado's Athletic Commissioner Joseph Mason.

Following is a bullet point list of rules of which I was curious. The complete bill may be found at mmawyoming.gov.

*Annual and at-event physicals are required for fighters.

*Annual blood work (Hepatitis A, B, C, and HIV) is required.

*Fighters must complete a registration process (see website).

*Two corners/coaches are permitted per fighter.

*Corners/coaches must register and pay an annual fee.

*Promoters will work directly with the Commission.

*Promoters must be registered and licensed (no fee) by Commission.

*Promoters must provide equipment for event; specifically gloves.

*Promoters should begin the process of scheduling and coordinating events 45 days in advance.

*No last minute fighter replacements are allowed. Alternate fights must be pre-approved.

*All MMA events must be sanctioned by the Commission; fines will be assessed for non-compliance.

*Native American Reservations are exempt.

*Promoters will pay 5% on all ticket and concession sales.

*There is a $300 event fee.

*Judges and referees must be certified.

*There is a 30 day suspension for a fighter that competes in an non-sanctioned event.

*There are size specifications for cages.

*Fighters under 18 years of age must have signed consent from parent/guardian.

Promoters and fighters may contact Jerry Davis directly at 307-287-2022.

Special thanks to Mr. Davis for his patience and opening in speaking with me and Sean Powell for facilitating this phone interview.
