Chavez Jr. vs Martinez Betting Odds

A fight that has been highly anticipated for months is finally on the door step.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Sergio Martinez.

Instead of re-hashing all of the various storylines including young vs old, the large shadow of Chavez Sr., the trash talk, etc, we are going to look at the current betting odds.

At the time of this writing (shortly before the fights), Martinez was still for the most part a heavy favorite with Chavez Jr. playing the role of the underdog in spite of being almost 30lbs heavier shortly after weigh-ins.

Depending on the sports book, Martinez's numbers have been hovering around -220. In betting terms, this number is referred to as the money line and means you would have to wager $2.20 on Martinez to win $1 or $220 to win $100.

On the flip-side, Chavez Jr. is coming in as the underdog around a +180 at most establishments in Las Vegas. Using the logic above, this means you would have to risk $1 to earn $1.80 or $100 to win $180.

Not bad numbers on the Chavez Jr. side although I still see the veteran in Martinez getting the win before the final bell.

On that note, the fight is scheduled for 12 rounds. The current "total rounds" betting line has the "over" at 9.5 rounds ( -240 ). This means you need to believe the fight is going to go to at least 10 rounds for you to win your bet.

You will need to bet $240 to win $100. The "under" is 9.5 rounds ( +200 ), meaning you need to risk $100 to win $200.
