Why do we love combat?
What is it that draws you to boxing and/or MMA?
'TheFightWire.com' went straight to the source for the answer, posing the question to some of the standout representatives of the Rocky Mountain combat scene including fighters, coaches and fans.
Thanks to all of those that contributed.
Here's what they had to say...
- "I love having to put my all in something to get ready and the feeling I get walking out to the cage knowing I worked so hard for this." - Jeremy Kimball / 'Bellator' Fighter, Former Colorado MMA Fighter
- "I feel that out of human nature, we as men and women take part in competition because of feeling dominant to overcome our fears or helping others overcome theirs, helping to keep the sport alive." - Adam Plascencia / 'Ultimate Warrior' Colorado Boxing Gym Owner/Coach
- "The camaraderie and the unpredictability on a fight by fight basis and the learning curve. I also enjoy the fact that you truly don't know what to expect on a second by second basis of each fight, let alone a fight by fight one. Lastly, I honestly think combat sports are the only sports measure where losses really don't break the best." - Jay Pagliaro / MMA Radio Personality
- "As a coach, what calls me to the world of boxing is pushing these guys to their limits so they can aim to be more then just an athlete. A champion." - Alex Utajara / 'Ghost Town' Boxing Coach
- "As a combat sports coach, I get to walk on a path with people who were often told they were incapable. Anyone can release into the cage a natural fighter, My passion is giving the gift of being a champion to everyone, not just the genetic lucky few." - Michael Sullivan / 'Fusboxe' Head Coach, Trainer
- "What drew me to combat sports is the euphoric feeling I get after a fight, Everything is clear. A true test of mind and body." - Chance Chin / Colorado MMA Fighter
- "What has always intrigued me about combat sports is that it allows one to dig deep into their personal depths of physicality while testing their mental fortitude. The heart, desire and strength of anyone delving into the sport soon finds out if he/she has what it takes to compete. Not many sports can say that. - Stephen Johnson / Respected Boxing Writer, Columnist, Radio Personality
- "I love how it builds character not only does it help you to find out your inner self and what you can accomplish by hard work. It builds class respect loyalty and honor." - Ryan Axtell / Colorado MMA Fighter, 'Cage Kings' MMA Promoter
- "What draws me to boxing is the competitive nature, the skill and will of the fighter to adapt to any style in order to win. Boxing is an art and when displayed in its purest form, it's a masterpiece." - Marcus Dawkins / Colorado Boxer
- "The MMA mindset that anything can be accomplished if you are determined to make it happen. The rush, the energy, the skills and the heart that the truest athletes carry in and out of the cage." - Monty Thompson / 'Cage Kings' Colorado MMA Promoter, Business Owner
- "I truly love every part of combat sports. The mental preparation, training, conditioning, clean eating, dedication, sacrifices, ambition, and heart are all aspects of health for the mind body and soul. Then you step into that cage and it's either you or your opponent, no one else. And you ask yourself who's the better man or woman today? Ding, ding, it's on! No better feeling than being a gladiator, a warrior." - Selina Valdez Montoya / Colorado MMA Fighter
- "I love boxing because of the will, heart and desire many athletes display. The sport has taken over my life once I started a career in helping troubled youth. I love the fact that boxing has saved plenty of struggling young men both spiritually and legally. Most boxers come from nothing and when that bell rings they give everything. The pure anticipation of a big fight is pure intoxicating for fight fans." - Bill Green / 'BG Sports Entertainment' Boxing Promoter
- "No matter what time period that I lived in, I would have chosen battle. Gladiator, knight, soldier, samurai. Some people jump off mountains or choose to go into space and a hundred other things. I choose to lace 'em up, here my music and head to the ring and do battle with another to see who's the best today." - Roosevelt Parker Jr. aka 'Black Rhino' / Rocky Mountain Heavyweight Boxer
- "Well I would have to say that I respect combat athletes and how much dedication, hard work and sacrifice they put into perfecting their craft, I admire that. I respect all of these athletes for all the time they spend towards becoming future champions." - Adam Corchado / 'Top Shelf' Colorado MMA Promoter
- "I was lost looking for something to hold on to and to live for. I was tired of being the same man I was. I found MMA and it changed my life. The discipline, the honor, and the hard work is the way this sport lets you know about yourself ." - Vinnie Lopez / Colorado MMA Fighter
- "I love combat sports because once you step in the cage, there's no more facades, No more acting, No more pretending. You're exactly who you are for that 15 minutes and only you and your opponent will know what the storm was like." - Lacey Schuckman / Colorado MMA Fighter
- "What I love about the fight game is the adrenaline rush you get when the cage door shuts and its just you and your opponent across from you. I just love to fight." - Ryan Martinez / CO, 'Bellator' MMA Fighter
- "What I love about MMA is the preparation of mind, body and soul, knowing once those doors lock on the cage it's a battle of will. MMA has changed my life forever. I love Colorado MMA and everyone involved." - Anthony Alirez / Colorado MMA Fighter
- "The thing I love the most is watching some of the most humble people on earth "FLICK THEIR SWITCH" before going to battle. Eyes go black, emotions and goose bumps start to flow as we watch them be in the "PRESENT" more than they ever are." - Jacob Ramos / Head Striking Coach 'Grudge Training Center'
- "The excitement for me with combat sports is the pure competition. Just you and another person against each other. One of you has to win and one has to lose. Its a true test of character. I love that! You will always see me with a smile in my fights because of this." - Ricky Johnson / Colorado MMA Fighter
- "Punching people in the face for money!" - Thomas ' Wildman' Denny / Colorado MMA Fighter, Trainer/Coach
