'TheFightWire.com' - The Premier Rocky Mountain Combat News Source Gym To Street...

Here are the results to Saturday night's Colorado boxing event in it's entirety by Stephen Johnson.

The Art of War’, held last night at Salon Madrid Events Center, 6495 Monaco St. in Commerce City, proved once again that Airtight Promotions (Steve Mestas) knows what it takes to provide entertaining and competitive boxing, this time with 7 bouts showcasing quality non-stop action.

Beginning with the opening bout, female amateurs Rachel Gladwinand Cecelia ‘Warrior Princess’ Martinez gave an outstanding performance with referee Tom Johnson having little to do as the fight was 3 rounds of good competition. Gladwin came away with the impressive UD victory, scores of 30-27 given by all 3 judges.

Next up was Alfonso Flores taking on Alejandro Ayala in a 145 lbs. contest that saw Ayala floor Flores with a beautiful overhand right in round 2 that had referee Rob Mullings looking closely. Flores recovered and as Ayala tired that knockdown was nullified, Flores getting the UD win with scores of 38-37 recorded by all 3 judges in their 4 rounds bout. Flores gets his first win, improving to 1-3 while Ayala drops to 0-2.

Bout #3 had 145 pounders making their pro debut, Adrian Pinedaand Andrew Almaguer, just beginning to heat up when Almaguer suffered an obviously painful separated shoulder, causing referee Stephen Blea to stop the bout with Pineda getting the round 2 TKO win.

Bout #4 was contested at 187 lbs. with Donald Cobb dispatching of a completely overmatched and overwhelmed making his pro debut, Jason Anderson. Cobb got the TKO win at just 47 seconds of round 1 in what was quick work for the heavy-handed cruiserweight. Taking nothing away from the now 2-0, 2 KO’s Cobb but he has yet to be pressed and his next fight should have him take a step up in competition IF they can find someone willing to travel and test him in Denver. He’s definitely ‘One-to-Watch’.

Bout #5 showcased the boxing skills of Ricky Rodriguez, who dispatched of a game Jairo Delgado by way of UD with all 3 judges in agreement with scores of 40-36. Rodriguez put on a tremendous display of boxing composure as he took his time with precision shots and smart boxing giving him the nice win. Rodriguez improves to 2-0 while Delgado drops to 3-9, 3 KO’s.

Bout #6 had 154 pounders Juan Rodriguez and Alfredo ‘King’ Corona tangle in a battle of two making their pro debut in what was an entertaining bout. The heavy-handed and excellent body work of Rodriguez gave the judges a tough decision as the tough as nails Corona had no quit in him. Corona was hit with everything but the kitchen sink, the scorecards reflecting just how close this fight was as 2 judges saw Rodriguez the winner with scores of 39-36 but 1 judge saw Corona winning the fight 39-36, giving Rodriguez the close SD win.

Bout #7 was a true war as 125 pound females Liza ‘Mrs. 2 slick 2 quick’ Amaya and Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Andersonwent at it hard for all 5 rounds with the boxing skills of Amaya prevailing, her coming away with the SD win. 2 judges scored the fight in favor of the slick southpaw Amaya 50-45 and 49-46 with one judge seeing the more than game Anderson the winner by way of a 49-46 score. Amaya improves to 5-0, 1 KO while Anderson drops to 3-5.

The co-main event was contested at 154 lbs. with Giovanni ‘Predator’ Merceron and Juan Medina engaging the crowd with 5 rounds of solid, quality action. This was definitely a close fight as Medina pressed the action throughout against the stronger Merceron who wisely ended every round moving forward, giving the judges something to remember. The scorecards read 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 all in favor of Merceron for the UD win as he improves to 5-1, 2 KO’s while Medina suffers his first loss, him now 1-1, 1 KO.

The main event was a 140 lbs. matchup featuring grizzled veteran Rob ‘Red Hot’ Frankel taking on a more than gameRobert Rodriguez in a match that went the entire 8 rounds. The southpaw Rodriguez held his own in a back and forth contest where the judges saw ‘Red Hot’ the UD winner with scores of 79-73, 75-74 and 78-74.

I had Frankel winning with a score of 75-74, his movement and experience the difference in a bout where Rodriguez had nothing to be ashamed of, him solid, determined and competitive. Frankel improves to 33-15-1, 6 KO’s while Rodriguez drops to 7-4, 3 KO’s.

This fight was the ‘beginning of the end’ of sorts for the Denver fan favorite Frankel, who has announced he will compete in just maybe 3 more fights before ending what has been an illustrious boxing career.

There’s been no better ambassador of the sport of boxing than Rob ‘Red Hot’ Frankel and here’s wishing him good health in his final bouts.

Thanks to Colorado's Stephen Johnson for this!
