Chester, VA - When Colorado's Rob 'Red Hot' Frankel (32-12-1) steps between the ropes Saturday night to face Paul 'The Pittsburgh Kid' Spadafora (47-0-1), there's going to be many story lines.
The amazing shot both of these fighters have worked themselves into after each facing their own adversity. Spadafora's still unblemished record. The implications a win would have on each's career, etc.
But none of these are as important to Frankel as his faith.
Even on this night.
"It means everything. It's the whole foundation of who I am. My boxing and career come secondary. I fight for the Lord in my eyes. I stand for God, I stand for the Lord. Anything I do is for that.
"None of us are perfect and we never will be, but if I can teach people how to come to God and live through Jesus, get them on the right path, in my eyes that means a lot to me."
The Denver resident has even gone as far as putting a gym in his church. Yes, IN the church, welcoming the public to come and train also. Something that he admits has helped bridge his two "families".
"I used to have my gym family and my church family but now that my gym is in the church, it's all one.
"I've had people from my gym start going to the church now. It's amazing. It's amazing to see the blessings that come. I've had many downfalls in my life and I still do to this day but I see the blessings in my life and realize that the downfalls are just lessons and they're teaching me how to get through things that I need to get through."
Another pillar Frankel has leaned on at times for support through some of the tough patches is Colorado boxing staple and owner/head coach of the 'House Of Pain' gym Steve Mestas.
'Red Hot' was at no loss for words when describing Mestas' impact.
"We've been together since the start of my career.
"He's my brother, he's family to me, my confidante, my mentor. He's been with me from the beginning. When I introduce him to people, I tell them this is the guy that gave me boxing. He means a lot to me."
And yes, there's still the business of the biggest fight of Frankel's career at hand.
Frankel comes in surging, winning four of his last five with his recent defeat coming in the form of a tough decision loss to Cleotis Pendarvis. He earned the shot at Spadafora in January by dominating the always tough Jermaine White. He also holds a recent victory over Colorado standout Raul 'El Chino' Carrillo.
As for Spadafora, he's coming off of a unanimous decision win over contender Solomon Egberime in back in December. When he faces Frankel, it will be his third bout in the past eight months after a nearly two-year layoff as he worked through his own issues.
Frankel is going in with eyes wide open in spite of the luster and shine on the once promising Spadafora's resume now showing more tarnish.
"He's a crafty southpaw. He definitely has some skills and I don't ever under estimate anybody. He was on his way to becoming a future hall-of-famer, a legend until he was shot and some other mistakes were made in his life.
"I still take that into consideration (Spadafora's skill). I've made my own mistakes but I've come back and I'm doing what I'm supposed to do and trying to get things right."
As far as a game plan for the showdown, it's a simple one for the fighter on the brink of destiny.
"Be mindful of his position as a southpaw fighter and mindful of his being a veteran in the game. I look at him like a super star and this being an opportunity for me. I respect everybody I fight.
"I'm going in ready for war."
Frankel wanted to thank all his friends and family that have helped him get here.
